DRY NEEDLING
Dry needling sessions involve inserting Acupuncture needle’s in the involved muscles and keeping them in for at least 20-30 minutes, and do physiotherapy modalities and myofascial release after needles are removed.
We often come across patients with chronic pain and doctors who treat them saying that they can reduce pain up to 40-50% only and say that we need more inventions of drugs/medicines to give 100% pain relief.
Not looking towards the other side of the coin will always make such feelings regarding the current scenario of treatment of chronic pain.
As we all know, the nerve has sensory as well as motor function, and if it is affected it will affect both functions.
Sensory function presents as pain and motor function presents with spasms and pain and palsies in extreme cases.
Muscle spasms follow a vicious cycle, finally becoming short and affecting the normal range of movements along with the formation of myofascial trigger points. Multiple trigger points from tout bands in muscles further decreasing the range of motions of muscles and finally neglecting this patient does not get results more than 40%.
To increase the results attention should be given to muscle component as it is given to nerves and bones.
Muscle being an ORPHAN organ and not a single speciality thinking over it in a scientific way.
Myofascial trigger points do get treated well by DRY NEEDLING sessions and results can be achieved to the stage where the patient says that I have no pain but just do a session of DRY NEEDLING for me to relieve me of that aura which makes me feel that my pain will come back.
And mind well it’s not easy for the doctors to do it, but patients too have to bear the pain, which is less than the ant bite. This can be decreased by using a local anaesthetic cream like Prilox cream before DRY NEEDLING.
Doctor’s should gain the thorough knowledge of muscles so as to treat this so-called my neuropathy.
Few Doctor’s do practice DRY NEEDLING and say it does not work, but it is done in a haphazard manner without proper training.
And to finally conclude, it’s not DRY NEEDLING alone but proper diagnosis, proper medical line of treatment, proper investigation, correction of Vit D3 and B12 deficiencies, Interventional pain management and finally the counselling which has to be individualized to the extent of affection of one’s own mind to the ongoing pain and its surrounding environment. In few cases need the help of Psychiatrist and other fellow Pain Physicians and other Multidisciplinary teams of Doctor’s is needed.
Also, patients are slaves of their minds. Since their birth, they gather experience of their bodies regarding how it responds to an array of treatments given.
So respecting their way of thinking and at times awakening them spiritually is need of the hour. They should be able to do meditation and divert themselves from the ongoing pain process to blissful healthy living.
